Q. So here I am Newlyn born and bred...place called uplong...... weeell Gwavas Estate to be exact, but left home many years ago, I have just found this site and am saddened to read that Edddy's is being closed but delighted to read that the ice works is still going strong, many is the time I have come out of the Gaiety cinema on a Saturday afternoon and sucked on a bit of ice from the ice works after eating chips from Jimmey Jewels or Scabby Sam's (next door to the barbers shop)....sometimes stopping off for a dip in Keil Alley or a mess around on the logs at the bottom of the slip....

Does anyone remember Miss Harvey or Miss Olerenshaw from the infants school, she used to give us sweets if we behaved......(I'm talking 1950's by the way) Anybody remember Mr Charles, Mr Tonkin or fuzzer Bates (the bastard!) from the big school, I would love to hear any bits of gossip from way back then.

A. Jewells fish and chip shop is still in existence [edit: it was at the time of writing but Eddies is now sadly gone...] but the Gaiety has gone Keel Alley is now filled in and grassed over and there is a car park immediately opposite (on land reclaimed from the harbour) The harbour is now deep water and there are new piers. No more 'quarry guns' there are plans to turn the quarry into a yacht marina and housing. Lots more has happened...
