Where was Tamlyn Row? Print E-mail
Thursday, 17 August 2006
Q. I am interested to know where Tamlyn Row was - have a feeling it was off Jack Lane. I am following the line of Robert t Maddern who lived this way in 1871 who moved on into the coalfields of south wales with one of his brothers. Can you shed any light on the socail aspect tp this please?

A. Tamlyn Row was definitely off Jack Lane (which was longer than it is today) but I don't know the exact location. However, I intend to find out and will get in touch with you again. At one time (1860s) there was a plan to build St. Peter's Church there but ownership of the land proved to be an unsurmountable barrier.

My great grandparents, the Snells,James and Agnes, also lived on Tamlyn Row. They emigrated to New Zealand in about 1863, to Leeston, a small farming settlement near Christchurch. There are a number of Maddren [sic] families there also, who came about the same time.

I don't know how well both of you (enquirers) know Newlyn so my reply may be helpful or fairly meaningless. If you do not know the village you could write to me c/o the website giving your postal address and I can send a map and any other useful information I have. Tamlyn Row was on the site where Bay View Terrace now stands. Entering Newlyn over the bridge continue straight ahead up Chywoone Hill until you reach the turning for Belle Vue on your left, the large house on the corner before the turning is the Malt House and Bay View Terrace is immediately opposite on Chywoone Hill. Tamlyn Row would have been demolished when Bay View Terrace was built. This area is now built up but in the early 19th Century Tamlyn Row was in a rural setting, Mount Pleasant Farm was just a little further up the hill from the cottages. T do not know the origins of the name 'Tamlyn' (or Tamblyn as it is normally spelt here) but the row of cottages with that name could easily have taken it from the fact that it was built by a person of that name or a number of them had homes there, that would not be unusual.

I too am very interested about Tamlyn Row as my family were from the West Country, principally Devon and Cornwall. My family ancestors moved to South Wales when coal mining began in the 1800s. Do you know how the name originated? Any information will be of interest to me.
