Newlyn's medieeval harbour could be given new lease of life Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 October 2005

Newlyn's old harbour is to be featured on Westcountry television, when two groups take part in a "People's Millions" competition.

The pre-15th century refuge, linked to a project to regenerate luggers in the village, will be explained to viewers by John Lambourn who has been working with his team on the restoration of the lugger Ripple, close to the fish market.

The mediaeval harbour restoration work, that includes replacing fittings and making other general improvements - in partnership with the Harbour commissioners - could mean reviving its use for luggers and for other activities.

At stake is a £50,000 prize, with Newlyn playing off against a project to improve a village hall at Noss Mayo, near Newton Ferrers. The prize comes from the Big Lottery Fund, part of the National Lottery.

The viewing public will be invited to vote for their choice following the screening of both proposals at 1pm on Wednesday November 2, during the channel's flagship news programme Westcountry Live, which is also shown at 6pm the same day. Voting can take place until midnight, with the result being announced the next day.

"This is a marine project in a marine county in a marine nation," said Mr Lambourn, in asking people to vote for the Newlyn scheme.

With him during the filming by Russell Thomas and directed by Gareth Allen, were some enthusiastic members of the West Cornwall Lugger Industry Trust, who believe the prize would help bring the famed old harbour back into its original use and provide Newlyn with a focus for its fishing heritage.

Mr Lambourn says economic, training, education, leisure and sport opportunities could be created by the £50,000 award.

The contest is planned to benefit local communities and the project must start by next February. The Commissioners had given the Trust permission to enter.

Any fittings replaced at the quayside would be to the same design as the original and the work carried out by local craftsmen. It is hoped to also provide a display and information point.

The other two projects will be shown head to head for another £50,000 prize, on October 31, featuring playparks for children at St Mary's, Isles of Scilly and in Plymouth.
