Merchants put fish under the spotlight Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 September 2005

Several local fish merchants and suppliers will be putting their produce under the spotlight in Truro next week as part of the Cornwall Food and Drink Festival. The event takes place from Friday, September 30, to Sunday, October 2, on Lemon Quay and will feature a superb display of Cornish fish and shellfish by local merchants including Mrs Cod and W Harvey & Sons.

"We want to show consumers that eating the best quality, freshest Cornish fish is easy," said John Coulson of Newlyn-based Mrs Cod.

"We can do all the preparation, all they have to do is cook and enjoy it."

Further temptation will be offered by long-established Newlyn firm W Harvey & Sons, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The local company will be promoting its range of shellfish - particularly dressed crabs, lobsters, crawfish and spider crabs.

One of the company's recent introductions is packs of prepared white crab meat and spider crab meat.

Customers will also be able to buy a pair of new products - two different styles of crab soup.

"We still pick all our shellfish by hand, the traditional way, and it shows," said Matthew Harvey, the fourth generation running this leading Cornish shellfish company.

"It retains the full taste and texture that nature intended."

Seafood Cornwall, the Newlyn-based Objective 1 Fisheries Programme grant-funded project, intends to make sure that all visitors to this year's festival will see some of the top quality fish landed by Cornish fishermen.

Exhibiting at the Cornwall Food and Drink Festival for the second year running, Seafood Cornwall - one of the event's sponsors - aims to make sure that more consumers appreciate the abundance and quality of fish and shellfish caught by local fishermen.

Seafood Cornwall project director, Nathan de Rozarieux, explained: "This is a fantastic opportunity for people to learn more about the diversity of Cornish fish.

"We know people would love to try different kinds of fish but are not sure what to look for or how to prepare it.

"Seafood Cornwall and Cornish fish merchants can answer all their questions and more."

Chefs, including Grant Nethercott, from Alba in St Ives, and Ben Harmer, from the Padstow Seafood School, will also be demonstrating some innovative ways of cooking Cornish fish in the festival's Food Theatre.
