A new one-stop advice and information centre for fishermen and fishing
businesses will be opening in Newlyn later this month.
The Newlyn Fisheries Resource Centre is based on the successful
West Cornwall Farm Business Resource Centre on The Strand at Newlyn
and has been developed by Objective One Fisheries Taskforce, Newlyn
Fish Industry Forum and the Cornish Fish Producers' Organisation.
The aim is to provide a one-stop shop for information or advice
on a range of issues and to coordinate industry-specific training
to anyone in the fishing industry.
The centre will be officially open on Wednesday, August 24, and
will provide an open day for fishermen, fish merchants, fish processors
and fishing related businesses.
"This is a fantastic facility for anyone engaged in the fish
industry to use, not just fishermen and not just those from Newlyn
- it is for members of the fish trade throughout Cornwall and the
Isles of Scilly," said Jon Lansley, the centre's administrator.
The new facilities include three computers which can be used for
informal training or searching the internet for information about
anything from packaging to processing.
The Resource Centre is also the offices for Seafood Cornwall, which
can offer advice to the industry on fish quality issues and is working
to improve marketing and the promotion of Cornish fish and seafood.
"The aim of the open day is for people to drop in informally
to see where we are and what we can offer them," said project
director Nathan de Rozarieux. "Jon Lansley and I have worked
in a number of roles in the local industry so we will be able to
help with whatever queries and ideas people may have," he added.
As well as drawing down funding from Objective One, the centre
has been supported by Barclays Bank, which recognised the need for
the centre to help people in the fishing industry to access training
and information an a range of issues.
"Barclays are delighted to be providing this tangible recognition
of our support for the Cornish fishing industry and the Penwith
community," said John Stevens, corporate manager at Barclays
Cornwall Business Centre. "Undoubtedly the Newlyn Fisheries
Resource Centre will make an important contribution to the local
economy and a vital part to the whole regeneration strategy for
Newlyn," he added.
