This year, because of a lack of manpower and for Health and Safety reasons,
there will not be the traditional raft race at Newlyn in aid of
the Christmas Lights. Kath Mildren, secretary of the harbour lights
commitee, said that instead their main fund raising event would
be on Fish Festival day, Monday, August 29, when they hoped to hold
a barbecue and have a bric-a-brac stall.
"We normally have the raft race on the Sunday before the Fish
Festival but because we have such a small committee, we weren't
able to organise it this year.
"It is a shame because we need to raise about £2,500
for the lights this year, just to keep them going. We not only need
to raise money for the lights, but we also want people to come forward
to help. Anyone who can spare a few hours will be more than welcome
at the annual meeting," she said.
Kath and husband Mike are the current licensees of the Fishermen's
Arms in Newlyn, but are planning to retire on August 1.
"I will probably get another job but Mike has been in the
trade for 40 years and at Newlyn for 26, so he needs a rest,"
she added.
If anyone would like to help Cath can be contacted, before August
1 on 01736 363399 or after that on 01736 351421.
