Eight members of the Mount's Bay Lugger Association will set sail
from Newlyn harbour on July 19 aboard the lugger Happy Return to
take part in a 'Sailathon' to raise money for the Fishermen's Mission.
A baton is being carried all around the coast of the UK and Happy
Return is carrying the baton on the Newlyn to Brixham, Brixham to
Cowes and Cowes to Folkestone legs.
The boat and crew will be blessed for a safe journey before setting
off by David Whitehead, superintendent of the Newlyn mission at
midday on the day of departure. At Folkestone Happy Return and her
crew will be welcomed by the town mayor at a civic reception to
celebrate the repeat of the journey first made 100 years ago.
The townspeople then had raised £132 towards the cost of
a new Mount's Bay lugger being built by the Kito yard at Porthleven.
The total cost of the new boat, all found, was £180.
The great grandson of the original owner, Brian Barton, from Lincolnshire,
is also making the trip. The return journey is expected to take
12 days with the lugger arriving in Falmouth where she is an annual
exhibit for the Maritime Museum
