Some residents have formed a protest group in order to oppose the
Port Penlee scheme, following the public exhibition of proposed
plans for the development.
The group says that to build upwards of 200 homes and a luxury
hotel would create a village four times the size of Paul and would
be "totally inappropriate" for the area.
"I could understand it if it was in the south of France,"
said spokesman Olga Stancombe.
Caroline Astin added: "People need to understand that this
development is not intended to benefit the local community, but
is a money-making venture for the quarry owners."
The group says Marine Developments Ltd has leased the quarry from
owners Hanson with the condition that it be developed as a marina.
However, there was no certainty that this condition could be fulfilled.
The "Stop The Marina!" group claims that representatives
of MDL offered contradictory statements as to the current and future
commercial viability as a working quarry and that it would seek
clarification.
"There is always the option of letting the land revert to
nature or using sympathetic development to create a haven for wildlife,"
said another group member, Adam Whaley.
The group says planning consent still has to be obtained from Penwith
Council for the proposed building work and an empowerment order
was required from the House of Lords in order to turn the quarry
into a harbour.
The consents would be sought in September and could take a year
to be determined, after which building work on the marina would
start.
Group members say most of the concern expressed at the plans displayed
centred on increased traffic flow, particularly through Newlyn.
They feel the project could be halted by County Highways if problems
of traffic congestion are insurmountable.
The first meeting of the Stop The Marina group will be at The Tolcarne
Inn, Newlyn on Tuesday at 7.30pm.
