A semi-conscious man was rescued from Newlyn harbour after apparently
falling in the water during the early hours of Good Friday. Falmouth Coastguards
were alerted by a security officer at the harbour, with a report that
a man was trapped between Mary Williams pier and a trawler.
Penzance Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team were dispatched to the scene, where
they found a middle aged man up to his neck in the water behind a ladder
on the side of the pier.
Penzance coastguard station officer Tim Stevens said that the man was
in a semi-conscious state, and being held up by a member of the public.
Despite the difficult position of the man, the coastguards managed to
lift him on the deck of trawler before being moved again on to the pier.
"It was a difficult situation but it was well handled by local coastguards,"
said Mr Stevens.
Firefighters from Penzance assisted coastguards, and the man was also
given first aid by staff from West Country Ambulance Service. He was taken
to Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, where he was treated for hypothermia.
