Petition to safeguard Newlyn Green Print E-mail
Thursday, 06 January 2005

A newlyn councillor has begun the New Year by asking local people to sign a petition calling on the county council to safeguard the future of Newlyn Green. John Payne has long campaigned for the green to be kept intact - opposing previous proposals to put a cycle path along its length or annexing part of it.

Mr Payne, who represents Penzance South Ward on Penwith Council, has placed copies of the petition for people to sign in shops and businesses in the port.

It reads: "We the undersigned totally oppose any attempt by Cornwall County Council to introduce unsegregated cycling across or attempt to annex any part of the grassed area.

"These being contrary to the existing covenant and bylaws.

"The green, sacred to us all, is seriously threatened."

Mr Payne said: "This is necessary to defend Newlyn Green, as has been previously agreed, against multi-use cycling and to protect the elderly, infirm and young people who use it."
