The port of Newlyn is preparing to be 'shipshape' for Friday, December
17, when the Christmas lights are switched on. And it will not be so much
the Pirates of Penzance who will be out in force this year but Neil Caddy
and the crew of Pirate FM Radio who will be sharing the combined honour
of pushing the magic buttons and illuminating the port for Christmas 2004
at 7.30pm on the night.
Newlyn's lights are always a spectacle to match those of its more famous
neighbour and, by their own reputation, always attract visitors not only
from West Cornwall but the county as a whole - and even beyond.
Of course the October storms left their mark on Newlyn and sadly this
year there will be no set pieces on the South Pier because of health and
safety concerns.
The railings were washed away by gales and storm-forced seas so that
part of the harbour will be devoid of lights this year.
However the hard-working lights team have been out in force with local
firm Celtic Scaffolding and work, as we go to press, continues apace.
There will be plenty to see and do in the port, both on lighting-up night
and in the days before Christmas, with its pubs, galleries and eating
places all assuring visitors of a "very warm welcome."
