Mopping up operations are still continuing in Newlyn following last month's
storms. Some of the windows of the Newlyn
Mission are still boarded up after waves smashed through them into
the main meeting room.
Acting Superintendent Keith Dickson said that repair work was likely
to take another two weeks or so.
"The damage will probably come to about £10,000 to £12,000,"
he said.
"We have had to completely gut Nora's Room, which has had to be
closed off to the public. But the rest of the Mission has been up and
running as usual."
Maura and Alan Thompson, of the Tolcarne Inn, say they are having a lot
of difficulty moving the huge quantities of seaweed from their car park.
"Because it is a private car park the council won't take it away,"
said Maura.
"And there is so much of it. We've had to pile it all up behind
the pub and try to get rid of it as best we can."
Maura said that during the storms sea water flooded the kitchen and out
through the bar and front door, but that they were lucky the pub was not
further damaged.
"We had to close the kitchen for four days and lost equipment such
as our fridge freezer," she said.
"And the kitchen will have to be closed again for a couple of days
later this month so that we can lay a new floor, otherwise it's business
as usual."
The Co-op at Wherrytown and its petrol station also re-opened for business
within a day of being flooded out on the first day of the storm.
