The traditional Cornish group Dalla will be releasing their new CD More
Salt at the Pilchard Works in Newlyn tomorrow. The title comes from one
of the songs written in Cornish in 1710 and describes the pilchard industry
at the time.
"The song described a wonderfully vibrant scene of women salting
the fish, crying for more salt, while others are shouting about paying
the pilchard tax, and finished with a wry observation - that the pilchard
business is like all the world, more poor people than rich," said
Hilary Coleman, of Dalla.
Dalla have been wowing audiences in Cornwall and beyond with their infectious
and innovative approach to the indigenous music of Cornwall which they
play for Noze Looan dancing.
Dancers from all over Cornwall flock to the dance nights and other musicians
have been inspired by them.
They have performed at various Cornish festivals, such as Golowan, and
they have been signed by agents from abroad and have had successful tours
of Europe and America.
Their music is also frequently used for film and television programmes.
Their last CD, A Richer Vein, received rave reviews in the international
music press and prior to the launch of this current CD they were getting
equally brilliant reviews.
After the launch ceremony at the Pilchard Works, the party will be moving
to the Acorn Theatre in Penzance for a public 'troyl' with cabaret and
Noze Looan dancing.
Tickets for the party, which kicks off at 8pm, are £4 on the door.
