The raising of the Breton fishing trawler Bugaled Breizh is being dogged
by difficulties. Waves up to nine feet high are delaying the salvage operation
off The Lizard, where the trawler sank in January following what some
believe to have been a "hit and run" incident.
According to the French news agency AFP, a cable linking a salvage crane
and the Bugaled Breizh snapped as the wrecked fishing boat was being raised
to the surface on Monday evening.
The raising of the wreck, which may still hold the remains of three of
the five crew who died when she sank, is a joint operation involving the
French Navy and a Dutch salvage company.
A specialist vessel, fitted with a crane capable of raising the trawler,
is now at Falmouth Docks awaiting a change in the weather. The trawler
may be taken to a sheltered bay near Falmouth before being transported
by barge to Brest.
