Chywoone Hill in Newlyn has been closed this week to traffic so that re-surfacing
work could be carried out. However, bus services for Gwavas Estate and
the Higher Faughan area have been continuing as usual, except they have
been re-routed to and from Mousehole.
A spokeswoman for the county council's highways department said that
work began on Monday and the road would be closed each day from 9.30am
to 5pm up to Friday.
Elderly residents who live at the top of the steep Chywoone Hill, had
been worried that the road closure would mean that no bus services would
be running over the five days.
Kenneth Limbrey, of Gurnick Road, Newlyn, said that he and his partner
would not be capable of walking up or down the hill in order to visit
shops and other facilities.
"We were told by one of the bus drivers that on the days the road
was closed to traffic there would be no bus services to the top of the
hill," he said.
"This caused a great many of us a lot of concern as there are lots
of elderly people in the area who rely on the bus and would not be able
to walk up or down that hill."
Newlyn councillor, John Payne, also expressed concern, writing to the
county council highways authority, suggesting that they keep a single
lane open at all times during resurfacing work.
Sarah Pinch from First buses told The Cornishman that following concerns
from members of the public, management from the company visited Newlyn
at the weekend.
"As a result it was decided that we would run the normal bus services
to Gwavas, but these would be re-routed via Mousehole and Paul,"
she said. "The buses linked up with the normal services at Mousehole,
so people had to change there for buses to and from Penzance."
