Newlyn's winter blues will vanish in the strength of the African sun next
Thursday, when images of the sun-drenched beaches of a Kenyan island are
displayed in the port. Paintings by artist, Helen Feiler, who has a gallery
in The Strand, Newlyn, are to form part of an African evening at the Tolcarne
Inn on March 4.
Helen, who has built a traditional-style holiday village called Diamond
Beach on the island of Manda, next to the better known paradise island
of Lamu, has painted beach scenes, landscapes and portraits of the native
islanders.
Her work, which she has re-produced as fine quality prints, portrays
the simmering golden sands of the island, the villages built from straw
and mud, groves of palms and mangroves and proud Masai warriors, displaying
their bead jewellery and rich garments.
Helen has also brought traditional African recipes from her own village
restaurant and these will be recreated by the Tolcarne's chefs and served
at next Thursday's opening night.
Brought up in Kerris, Helen first exhibited paintings at the Newlyn Gallery
at the age of 16, but is probably better known today for her unique jewellery,
which she makes and sells from The Helen Feiler Gallery.
She hopes that by putting her paintings of Africa into the Tolcarne Inn,
that the many non-art-gallery going residents of Newlyn, will be able
to appreciate them as well.
"I have been living and working in Newlyn on-and-off all of my life,"
said Helen.
"I hope that by displaying prints of my paintings at the pub, more
people will be able to appreciate the rich artistic heritage we have here
in the port."
Helen's daughter, Rachel Feiler, has been busy marketing Diamond Beach
village over the Winter, ready for its re-opening in August.
For those of us not lucky enough to be able to visit the island and village
for ourselves next Summer, then a visit to Newlyn's Tolcarne Inn, will
certainly give us a taste of Africa - in more ways than one!
