Elisabeth Stevenson, a partner in the Newlyn based fishing firm W Stevenson
& Sons, has been elected chair of the National Federation of Fishermen's
Organisation.
The NFFO is the main representative body for fishermen in England and
Wales - and this is the first time that a woman has been elected as chairman.
Elizabeth told The Cornishman :"Obviously I am very proud of the
fact that I have been given the chance to do something that is very important
for the industry.
"I was a little apprehensive as is a douting task, but I think I
will enjoy it - or at least I hope I will!
"I am following in the footsteps of some very good chairmen so it's
important that I continue in the way that they have done. I am very pleased
that thy have also offered me their support.
"I think this will be good news for Newlyn because obviously it
is a priority to me - although being chair I will have to look at the
whole of the industry and not just the industry here in Newlyn and the
South West.
"But it does mean I will be able to put over the problems in Newlyn
first hand.
"I will be making extra contacts and talking to contacts who are
the policy makers.
" I really am quite proud to be the new chair - I would have liked
to have done it when I was a bit older, but you don't get the chance twice,"she
added.
Elizabeth will take over from Elizabeth's husband Sam Lamborn, who has
been NFFO president for the past two years.
The NFFO's selection policy ensures that the chairman and the president
come from different fishing regions, to ensure that the South West and
the North East - England two main fishing regions - get equal presentations.
When the chairman retires after two years in office they automatically
become president and a new chairman, who comes from a different area is
then elected.
