Widow of Sir Terry Frost dies Print E-mail
Thursday, 29 January 2004

Lady Kathleen Frost - the widow of Penwith's world renowned abstract artist Sir Terry Frost - died last week. She had been travelling along Penzance promenade by car on Wednesday morning before collapsing at the wheel. An ambulance was called but resuscitation attempts at the scene, and later at West Cornwall Hospital in the town, proved to be in vain. She was 81.

Sir Terry died in September of last year at St Julia's Hospice in Hayle, only a few weeks before his 88th birthday.

Kathleen leaves a daughter, Katie, and five sons, Adrian, Anthony, Matthew, Simon and Stephen.

Cornishman arts writer and a family friend of the Frosts, Frank Ruhrmund, said Kathleen had been Terry's lifelong supporter.

"She had every confidence in Terry's art and was always behind him in whatever he done," he recalled. " They had a house in Newlyn, but she really made it like an extension of his studio."

Terry and Kathleen (nee Clarke) married in 1945, when the painter was still in the army.

Shortly after they came to live at Carbis Bay, initially renting a caravan, and were the neighbours of renowned St Ives artists Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth.

While Terry was a struggling artist, Kathleen supported them by getting a job with the Post Office, delivering telegrams by bicycle.

In more recent times, Lady Frost accompanied Sir Terry on a lecturing and teaching trip to Canada.

The funeral will be held at Penzance Roman Catholic Church at 11am tomorrow morning (January 30), followed by a private family service at Penmount Crematorium at Truro.

A reception will be held at The Coastguard Hotel in Mousehole, from 3pm to 6pm for family and close friends.

No flowers by request, donations in lieu to St Julia's Hospice, Hayle.
