A large number of Newlyn residents are opposed to the planned infill of
the sea behind the Tolcarne Inn, as part of the proposed Newlyn Regeneration
Project, it is claimed. And next week anyone unhappy about the proposal,
is being asked to sign a petition which will be placed in shops, galleries
and businesses in the port.
Two local people, who want to remain anonymous at this stage, are organising
the petition, claiming that more and more residents are expressing concerns
about the proposed infill.
"At the recent AGM of the Newlyn Association, local members and
members of the public were asked for a show of hands on whether they were
happy or not about the sea being in-filled behind the Tolcarne,"
said the petition organiser.
"The proposal is to make space for parking, a coach drop off point,
a relocated market with visitors gallery and restaurant above.
"But the majority of the people at the meeting raised their hands
against the plan, with people saying that although they weren't opposed
to the regeneration plans as a whole, they were concerned about the scale
of the Tolcarne aspect.
And she said that local fishermen were saying that the plans for the
new fish market are going to make them look like "animals in a zoo!"
Following the meeting, the two local resident got together and felt so
strongly that local people concerned about the regeneration proposals
were not being listened to, that they decided to test public opinion.
"We will be putting out the petition forms next week all over Newlyn,"
said the organiser.
"Some of us feel that if this part of the project goes ahead unchallenged,
then we will be going down the same disastrous road Penzance took when
they filled in a large part of their harbour."
