Memories will have been stirred by our front page photo of the Rose of
Sharon for Newlyners and a St Ives family whose three sons have all skippered
the boat. Although owned by the Stevens family and registered in Scotland,
the trawler has fished out of Newlyn most of her working life - right
up until her recent decommissioning.
The Rose of Sharon's third and final skipper - Peter Stevens - delivered
her on her final voyage to Dartmouth where she will be converted into
a house boat.
Her historic trip was photographically recorded by Richard Major of Mousehole
who took this picture of her leaving Newlyn harbour at 7am one recent
morning.
Built in 1969 at the yard of J Forbes of Sandhaven near Fraserburgh in
Scotland, the 65ft trawler was built for Mr Ernest Stevens of St Ives.
She mostly fished from Newlyn, in the 70's as a pair trawler on the huge
shoals of mackerel which were prevalent at that time.
She later reverted to single boat trawling.
