On the face of it the Port Penlee plan for the multi-million pound development
of Newlyn quarry for a marina has considerable merit.
It is a major landmark scheme for Penwith and should create wealth and
employment if and when it progresses. The site itself is stunning and
with the right development could provide a facility of breath-taking appeal.
The people behind it will of course be seeking whatever grants may be
available but much of the work so far we understand is privately financed
as will be the future plans.
And there will of course be concerns, including those over increased
traffic and damage to the natural habitat that has emerged in the defunct
quarry.
And there are also worries that such a development may conflict with
the plans for the regeneration of Newlyn Harbour.
Yet given the will and subject to these concerns being properly addressed
through the planning process, the scheme is worthy of further investigation.
It is visionary plans such as Tate St Ives, the Eden Project and the
Falmouth Maritime Museum that have been at the forefront of the county's
renaissance.
Port Penlee could just rank alongside them.
