A Penzance man, widely acknowledged as one of the best shipwrights in
Cornwall, has died in hospital at Truro, following a stroke.
Freddie Edwards, of St Francis Street, was 55.
Born in Glasgow to a Scottish mother and a Cornish father, Freddie was
brought to Cornwall as a babe in arms and always considered himself a
true Cornishman.
For many years he worked as a shipwright in Newlyn, but in latter years,
due to ill health, worked part time when his extensive shipwright skills
were required.
Just before he was taken ill two weeks ago, Freddie, had sailed to the
Isles of Scilly and back, with his friend, Les Rowe, landlord of the Dock
Inn.
Freddie had helped rebuild Les' classic lugger, the Ocean Pride, restoring
her to her former glory and demonstrating his many skills as a shipwright.
"I am so glad he came across to the Scillies with me," said
Les.
"We had a great time and I am happy to think he really enjoyed himself
on his last weekend before his stroke."
Les said that the very last boat Freddie worked on was the classic Breton
crabber, Stereden va Bro, owned by Jeff Phillips.
"He erected a new 65 foot mast on her, which shows the extent of
his skills," said Les.
"Many of us in Penzance have lost a dear friend and one of Cornwall's
greatest shipwrights."
His funeral will take place today (Thursday) at 3 pm at Penmount Crematorium,
followed by a wake at the Dock Inn, starting at 5.30 pm. He leaves a son
and two daughters.
