Inquiries from around the world on new website for Newlyn event.
For the first time in its history, Newlyn Fish Festival – which
this year celebrates the centenary of Fishermen’s Mission in the
port – has it’s own website.
Already the site has been visited by people from around the world, inquiring
about the popular event, which begins with the blessing of the fleet on
August 24, followed the next day by the main festival and fish auction
on the August bank holiday.
The new website has been created by Gabriella Nonino, of Orchard Place,
Newlyn, as part of the community website she created for free earlier
this year for the port and now considered by many as one of the best community
websites for any town in the country.
The general Newlyn website contains photographs and information’s
on many of the port’s artists, galleries, museums and businesses.
It has a section dedicated to fish and fishing; a history complied by
local historians, plus artists impressions of the proposed development
of Port Penlee.
The site publishes the letters and articles contributed by local people
and visitors from abroad, including, at the moment a writer from Mexico
who has based his latest novel in Newlyn!
“I want the website to be a real part of the community” says
Gabriella.
“It is there for everyone to access and use and to contribute to.
I hope it will become a great asset to Newlyn with people throughout the
world being able to find out all the things this port has to offer.”
Gabriella hopes that local people and businesses will help the site grow
by contributing reports, letters, local information and events.
“Newlyn is a great place to live and has lots of things going on,”
says Gabriella.
“We want to get as much as possible on the website so that we can
really promote the port, its businesses, artists and locally organised
events.”
The new Newlyn Fish Festival website gives a programme of events, a history
of the Newlyn Mission; articles on the future of fishing and the proposals
for the port’s regenerations.
It includes a list of performers who will be on the main stage on the
festival day itself – August 25 – Beginning with Newlyn Male
Choir at 9:30 am.
The festival will be opened by former coxswain of St Mary’s lifeboat
for over 30 years, Matt Lethbridge and attended by the Penlee Lifeboat
crew.
The day will also see performances by Janet Eathorne, Polperro Chor,
St Keverne Band, Cape Cornwall Singers and The Tinners, among others.
The original Newlyn website is simply called www.newlyn.info.
