Newlyn's Gwavas Estate is set to benefit from a £200,000 community
development scheme over the next three years. Funded by the Housing Corporation
and the South West Regional Development Agency, the project will be managed
by Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change (CN4C) in partnership with an inter-agency
group which includes local residents and organisations such as Penwith
Housing Association and the police.
Explained CN4C's community operations director, Tarn Lamb: "This
funding will help to put the heart back into the community here.
"For a start it will pay for a community development worker based
on the estate, and a range of community-based activities for people who
live here.
"In time we hope to do a lot more, so that local residents can be
proud of Gwavas.
"We'll be focussing in particular, but not exclusively, on facilities
for young people."
Jenny Beamish, chair of Gwavas Residents' Association, said: "We've
been working towards this for two years now, and it's great to see that
at last we're getting some real funding, and some real action.
"Well over 500 people live here, including a higher than average
proportion of elderly residents and single parents, but at the moment
we don't even have a toddler group.
"When it comes to local authorities, we've long felt like the poor
relations at the top of the hill.
"At last, that's all beginning to change.
"Our priority will be community involvement, getting all ages together,
and making the most of our advisory room.
"We'll make everyone welcome - from young families to pensioners.
"Not knowing how to use a computer is a big barrier in today's world,
so we're planning to have a computer suite where people can access new
technology.
"It'll give them confidence, and make them feel more able to do
things for themselves.
"We're also hoping to set up a toddler group, and buy some equipment
for older children."
