A major regeneration scheme for Newlyn is being backed by the Objective
1 Fisheries Task Force whose representatives say they are pleased at the
progress and support to date.
The Task Force has eight key projects to assist the development of Cornwall's
fishing industry and the development of infrastructure projects identified
by the Newlyn Regeneration study is one of them. Sam Lambourn, of Newlyn,
chairman of the Objective 1 Fishing Industry Task Force, said: "The
development of Newlyn is key to the future of the fishing industry in
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly as a whole.
"The Task Force is therefore watching the progress of the Newlyn
Fish Industry Forum very closely and is greatly encouraged by recent developments
and the public support. Naturally the Task Force will be happy to help
the Newlyn Fish Industry Forum if necessary to develop this key Objective
1 project."
As part of the regeneration scheme planned for the port, a new area designed
specifically for refit work is being planned.
The present slipway will be decommissioned and a tracked cradle slipway
for large vessels and a concrete slip for smaller vessels will become
the hub of boat repair work.
At an estimated cost of £69 million, the total regeneration scheme
is modelled on many successful Brittany fishing ports where refit work
is a major factor.
Chairman of the Newlyn Fish Industry Forum, Michael Galsworthy, has stressed
the future economic potential in West Cornwall.
