The regeneration of Newlyn has already begun if the recently developed
Duke Street complex is anything to go by!
For the site incorporates a newly opened gallery, cafe, gift shop and
affordable housing - all designed to the highest possible specifications
and all resembling a row of granite Cornish cottages that look as if they
were built 200 years ago.
The site, a former derelict pottery, was re-developed by local builder
Pete Cattran, who has received widespread praise for the quality of the
buildings and the craftsmanship involved.
It now incorporates a number of small cottages that are currently being
finished off and are soon to be let.
The gallery, cafe and gift shop, which have cobbled paths leading from
the road and adjacent car park, has been re-named The Duke Street Gallery
and Coffee Shop. It is being run by Pete's daughter Katie Cattran and
her life-long friend, Emily Roberts - both accomplished artists.
They are exhibiting locally made crafts and quality gifts, some of which
were brought to the gallery-shop by passing artists and crafts people
the moment it opened just a couple of weeks ago.
"We have had a brilliant response from local people and visitors
alike," said Katie.
"Everyone appears very impressed with the building itself, which
has wooden floors, white walls, spotlighting and Cornish sash windows."
As well as providing a friendly welcome, both Katie and Emily serve organic
Fairtrade coffees, teas and homemade cakes (made by Katie's sister, Lottie)
and say the outside seating area is proving very popular.
They are also both exhibiting their own work and will soon be opening
more gallery space on the first floor.
"We are considering using the upstairs for exhibitions," said
Emily.
"But we don't want to get too serious and arty. We want the gallery
to be fun, friendly and cheerful, where local people can exhibit their
quality made crafts and art."
