Mungo Powney - 5th August to 7th September
Badcocks welcomes the return of painter Mungo Powney along with newcomer
to the gallery, Simon Andrew. Simon is no stranger to Cornwall, having
spent most of his childhood in West Penwith and now living in Canada,
he returns here every summer to visit family, friends and paint.
Andrew’s paintings are painterly and confident, they capture the essence of the Cornish landscape with sweeps of colour, verve and energy. He talks about place and memory – “I work from an emotionally imbued memory of place, sometimes painting directly then reworking in the studio, sometimes using photographs as aids. I have doggedly engaged with the tradition of romantic realism, somewhat at odds with the prevailing mainstream.”
Powney’s language on the canvas is primarily a relationship with colour and placement, “Recently I have been drawn to rich and chaotic subjects. I am fascinated by intimacy in painting and find that this is often expressed visually through slight disorder. Besides suiting the language of painting a complicated subject forces me to open out and do my best to respond to it - to shoot from the hip. If I feel the painting has lost its way slightly I will scrape down a large section of the work and broadly set it free again with a new background colour. “ His subjects are domestic interiors, landscapes and village scenes, all have a feeling of vitality and harmony created through the immense and subtle usage of colour.
