Newlyn Primary School has been given a prestigious
national award in recognition of its high standard of literacy and
numeracy achievement. The school was one of four Cornish primaries and a
secondary to be honoured with the Quality Mark Award at a presentation
last week.
Newlyn
Primary received its award as recognition for raising the level of
attainment and achievement in literacy and numeracy skills.
Mary
Child, Cornwall assessor for the Quality Mark Award scheme, said: "To
get a Quality Mark Award, schools have to show that they are
successfully tackling under-achievement and under-attainment in
literacy and numeracy. They must be able to show that their pupils are
improving in these areas.
"This involves a rigorous assessment
process, which includes compiling a portfolio of work, demonstrating a
range of teaching and learning styles and showing commitment to
improving the skills of staff.
"Parents must also be involved in the process."
Representatives
from the school were presented with the award by professor Bob Dobbie,
a member of the Basic Skills Agency Board, at a function at Truro's
Hall for Cornwall last Thursday.
The other schools receiving the
honour on the day were Mount Hawke Community Primary School, St Mawes
Community Primary School, St Meriadoc CE Junior School, at Camborne,
and Sir Robert Geoffery's School at Saltash.
Wadebridge School became the first secondary in Cornwall to receive the award.
