Monday November 20

Heading westwards across the Bay in the afternoon was the Singaporian registered bulker Maritime Peace. Owned by IMC Shipping Co Private Ltd, of Singapore, she was built in 1983, with a gross tonnage of 15,850 and a deadweight of 26,384 tons. She is 160 metres in length with a beam of 25 metres and a draft of 10.4 metres. Capable of carrying 33,139 cubic metres of grain her 7,200bhp engine gives her a speed of 13.7 knots.

Following astern was the Antiguan flagged cargo vessel Gerd Sibum owned by Stefan Sibum of Harem Ems, Germany. Built in 1998, she is 99 metres in length with a beam of 18 metres and a draft of 6.6 metres, her gross tonnage is 3,999 and deadweight is 5,272 tons. Capable of carrying either 6,712 cubic metres of grain or 614 containers of which 91 can be refrigerated, her 5,384bhp engine gives her a speed of 16 knots.

Heading eastwards was the Estonian flagged cargo vessel Vudi (ex Tafelberg). Owned by Euro-Baltic Shipping Services of Tallin, Estonia, she was built in 1981 with a gross tonnage of 1,939 and a deadweight of 2,889 tons. She is 88 metres in length with a beam of 11 metres and a draft of 4.7 metres. Capable of carrying either 3,806 cubic metres of grain or 90 containers her 999bhp engine gives her a speed of 10 knots.

Landing at Newlyn was the Salcombe registered crabber Pen Glas (SE.34).

Tuesday November 21

Heading westwards in the morning was the British registered product tanker Allurity owned by F T Everard & Sons, of Dartford, Kent and built in 1981 with a gross tonnage of 1,926 and a deadweight of 3,027 tons. She is 79 metres in length with a beam of 13 metres and a draft of 5.5 metres. Capable of carrying 3,441 cubic metres of liquid products her 3,000bhp engine gives her a speed of 12,25 knots.

She was followed by the Dutch flagged chemical tanker Dutch Faith. Owned by Broere Shipping of Dordrecht, Holland, she was built in 1996 and is 100 metres in length with a beam of 17 metres and a draft of 5.5 metres. Gross tonnage is 3,419 deadweight is 4,441bhp engine giving her a speed of 14.7 knots.

Heading eastwards was the Liberian registered container vessel MSC Venice owned by Ciel Ship Management of Athens, Greece. Built in 1978 with a gross tonnage of 16,471 and a deadweight of 19,261 tons she is 178 metres in length with a beam of 25 metres and a draft of 9.2 metres. Capable of carrying 1,261 containers of which 80 can be refrigerated, her 12,000bhp engine gives her a speed of 18.5 knots.

In the afternoon the Barbados registered cargo vessel Arctica Hav (ex Union Venus) headed westward. Owned by Odd Wagle of Oslo, Norway, she was built in 1984 with a gross tonnage of 1,532 and a deadweight of 1,890 tons. She is 82 metres in length with a beam of 11 metres and a draft of 4.2 metres. Capable of carrying 2,916 cubic metres of grain or 80 containers, her 600bhp engine gives her a speed of 10.6 knots.

Heading eastwards was the Cypriot registered product tanker Inzhener Lupichev owned by Volgotanker Joint Stock Co, of Samara, Russia and built in 1997, with a gross tonnage of 2,954 and a deadweight of 5,150 tons. She is 114 metres in length with a beam of 16 metres and a draft of 6.2 metres. capable of carrying 5,440 cubic metres of liquid products. Her 2,855bhp engine gives her a speed of 11 knots.

Wednesday November 22

Heading westwards in the morning was the Antiguan flagged cargo vessel Canum built in 1994 with a gross tonnage of 2,075 and a deadweight of 3,027 tons. Owned by Redderei Erwin Strahlmann of Marne, Germany, she is 88 metres in length with a beam of 13 metres and a draft of 4.6 metres. Capable of carrying either 4,005 cubic metres of grain or 154 containers her operational speed is 10 knots.

Passing her heading east was another Antiguan flagged cargo vessel, the Clavigo, built in 1992 with a gross tonnage of 2,446 and a deadweight of 3,735 tons. Owned by River Liner Befrachtungs und Bereederungs of Haren Ems, Germany, she is 87 metres in length with a beam of 13 metres and a draft of 5.5 metres. She can carry either 4,650 cubic metres of grain or 188 containers of which 12 can be refrigerated. Her 2,039bhp engine gives her a speed of 10.6 knots.

Another cargo vessel heading east was the Winger. Owned by Baff Vyborg Ltd, of Vyborg, Russia, and registered under the flag of Belize, she was built in 1976 and is 87 metres in length with a beam of 13 metres and a draft of 4.7 metres. Gross tonnage is 2,161 deadweight is 2,170 tons and she is capable of carrying 4,040 cubic metres of grain or 125 containers of which 10 can refrigerated. Her 1,950bhp engine gives her a speed of 13 knots.

Arriving at Newlyn to shelter from the gales was the Le Guilvinec registered French trawler Anais (GV.555511). Having spent the last 10 days at sea, when she was only able to fish for three of them, the skipper felt that he would come in and have a rest. Apparently, some of his colleagues from Loctudy have not left port for the last 15 days.

Carrying out manoeuvres in the Bay all day and occasionally appearing out of the mist was the Fort Class 11 Replenishment Ship Fort Victoria (A.387) built by Harland & Woolf in 1992. Displacing 31,500 tons, she is 204 metres in length with a beam of 30 metres and a draft of nine metres. Built as a 'one stop' replenishment ship, she can carry the widest range of armaments, fuels and spares at an operational speed of 20 knots. She can operate up to five Sea King or three Merlin helicopters with full maintenance facilities. Her medical facilities have been upgraded with a 12-bed surgical capability giving her a limited role as a primary casualty receiving ship. Ship's complement consists of 100 Royal Fleet Auxillary, 24 Ministry of Defence civilians, 32 Royal Navy and up to 122 Fleet Air Arm personnel. Her armament consists of four 30mm guns, two Phalanx close-in weapons. Although she is fitted for the Sea Wolf missile system, this is not currently fitted.

Thursday November 23

Heading westwards in the evening was the Marshall Islands registered bulk carrier Attika. Owned by Attica Shipping (Cruises) Co., of Athens, Greece, she is managed by Peter Doble of Hamburg, Germany. Built in 2001 with a gross tonnage of 5,381 a deadweight of 7,511 tons she is 107 metres in length with a beam of 18 metres and a draft of 6.6 metres. Capable of carrying 9,729 cubic metres of grain her 3,807bhp engine gives her a speed of 12 knots.

Friday November 25

Another vessel owned by Redderei Erwin Strahlmann of Marne, Germany, the Bounder headed westwards in the morning. Registered under the Antiguan flag she was built in 1989 with a gross tonnage of 1,984, a deadweight of 3,223 tons and is 89 metres in length with a beam of 13 metres and a draft of 4.7 metres. Capable of carrying either 3,983 cubic metres of grain or 158 containers, her 816bhp engine gives her a speed of 11.5 knots.

Passing her and heading eastwards was the Liberian registered bulk carrier Afovos. Owned by Aegean Bulk Co, of Athens, Greece, she was built in 2001 and is 225 metres in length with a beam of 32 metres and a draft of 12.4 metres. Gross tonnage is 39,978, deadweight is 74,297 tons and her 13,867bhp engine gives her a speed of 14.7 knots. Following astern was the Dutch registered chemical/oil carrier Stella Wega built in 1996 with a gross tonnage of 3,983 and a deadweight of 4,350 tons. She is 105 metres in length with a beam of 16 metres and a draft of six metres. Her 4,785bhp engine gives her a speed of 15 knots.

Saturday November 25

In the afternoon the German flagged chemical / oil carrier Seabass headed westwards. Owned by German Tanker Shipping Co, of Bremen, Germany, she was built in 2001 with a gross tonnage of 21,353 and a deadweight of 32,445 tons and is 177 metres in length with a beam of 28 metres and a draft of 11 metres. Capable of carrying 37,759 cubic metres of oil or liquid chemicals her 11,338bhp engine gives her a speed of 16 knots.

In the evening the small Danish coaster Atlas anchored in the Bay between Newlyn and Penzance. Owned by Joprgen Robot Hansen of Svendborg, Denmark and registered under the Danish flag, she was built in 1961 with a gross tonnage of 524 and deadweight of 723 tons. She is 52 metres in length with a beam of nine metres and a draft of 3.5 metres. Capable of carrying 934 cubic metres of grain her 400bhp engine gives her a speed of 10 knots.
