The Newlyn Male Choir is hoping to attract new singers at an open
practice session taking place next week.On Monday would-be members are
being invited to try out for the choir that has suffered falling
numbers in recent years.
The
group was formed in 1921 by local men who wanted to raise money for the
family of a man killed in an accident at Newlyn Quarry. Since then it
has continued to support charities and other associations during
performances all over Cornwall, England, Wales and in Brittany.
Secretary
Bryan Marshall said although the choir's numbers have never been large,
usually around 40 members, the singers always provide quality
performances with a unique 'Newlyn sound'.
He added:
"Unfortunately due to the loss of members through illness and normal
fluctuations, the choir is now quite a few less and is urgently seeking
new members."
An open practice evening will take place upstairs in the Seaman's Mission, Newlyn, at 7.30pm on Monday, January 8.
Mr
Marshall said: "Any potential new members would be made most welcome.
You don't have to be able to read music, just have a reasonable voice
and the ability to follow a tune. You will not be asked to give an
audition on your own.
"There is a six-week trial period during
which you will find your most suitable voice range and for the musical
director to judge your ability."
