Saturday January 6

Heading westwards in the morning was the Isle of Man registered cargo vessel Union Saturn owned by Favorite Shipping of Bergen, Norway. Built in 1991 she is 99 metres in length with a beam of 12 metres and a draft of 4.8 metres. Gross tonnage is 2,230 deadweight is 3,212 tons and she is capable of carrying 4,555 cubic metres of grain of 114 containers with her 1,018 bhp engine giving her a speed of 10.5 knots.

Astern of her was the St Vincent and Grandines flagged cargo vessel Faustina owned by Amisso AS of Tallinn, Estonia. Built in 1990 with a gross tonnage of 1,999 and a deadweight of 3,020 tons she is 82 metres in length with a beam of 12 metres and a draft of five metres. Capable of carrying either 4,530 cubic metres of grain or 128 containers her 2,039 bhp engine gives her a speed of 12 knots.

 

Heading towards the Lizard was the Norwegian flagged cargo vessel Lysfoss owned by Ross Liner AS of Oslo, Norway. Built in 1989 she is 101 metres in length with a beam of 10 metres and a draft of 5.8 metres. Gross tonnage is 4,4,71 deadweight is 3,728 tons and she can carry up to 92 containers with her 3,000 bhp engine giving her a speed of 14 knots.

In the afternoon, the Russian flagged twin screw cargo vessel Kaleval headed westwards. Owned by the White Sea and Onega Shipping Co, of Kareliya, Russia, she was built in 1986 with a gross tonnage of 2,829 and a deadweight of 3,220 tons. She is 105 metres in length with a beam of 17 metres and a draft of 3.4 metres. Capable of carrying 3,847 cubic metres of grain her operational speed is 11 knots.

Following astern of her was the Dominican flagged cargo vessel Fairwind. Built in 1977 she is 84 metres in length with a beam of nine metres and a draft of 3.3 metres. Gross tonnage is 1,300 deadweight is 1,450 tons and she is capable of carrying 2,214 cubic metres of grain or 48 containers with her 995 bhp engine giving her a speed of 11.4 knots.

Heading eastwards was the Singaporian flagged car carrier Pacific Breeze owned by Walleniusredereirna AB of Stockholm, Sweden. Built in 1986 with a gross tonnage of 42,105 and a deadweight of 17,271 tons she is 195 metres in length with a beam of 29 metres and a draft of nine metres. Her 12,400 bhp engine gives her a speed of 18 knots.

Monday January 8

The Penlee Severn class All Weather lifeboat Ivan Ellen (17-36) was tasked in the early morning to take an ill crew member off the Spanish trawler Sant Hill in Mount's Bay. The crewman, who was not ill enough to justify a medivac by helicopter, was transferred to the lifeboat after the vessel had steamed some 150 miles to land him and was brought ashore to Newlyn where a waiting ambulance took him to hospital for treatment.

In the afternoon the Bahamian flagged cargo vessel Fri Lake, owned by Kopervik Ship Management of Kopervik, Norway, headed westwards. She is 89 metres in length with a beam of 12.5 metres and a draft of 6.5 metres. Gross tonnage is 2,218 and deadweight is 3,400 tons.

She was followed by the Antiguan flagged cargo vessel RMS Sonsbeck owned by Rhein Mass Und See Schiffahrtskontor GMBH of Duisberg, Germany, which was on her way to Dublin. She is 88 metres in length with a beam of 13 metres and a draft of 5.35 metres. Gross tonnage is 2,449 deadweight is 3,550 tons and her 2,020 bhp engine gives her a speed of 10 knots.

Astern of her was the Isle of Man registered chemical tanker Trans Alia owned by Heuvelman Tran Ali all BV of Roosendaal, Holland. Built in 2001 with a gross tonnage of 3,441 and a deadweight of 5,064 tons she is 99 metres in length with a beam of 15 metres and a draft of 6.3 metres. Capable of carrying 5,239 cubic metres of liquid chemicals her 3,071 bhp engine gives her a speed of 16 knots.

Thursday January 9

Heading westwards in the late afternoon was the Panamanian flagged bulk carrier Cape Azalea owned by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd ('K'Line) of Tokyo, Japan. Built in 1996 with a gross tonnage of 87,799 and a deadweight of 171,846 tons she is 289 metres in length with a beam of 45 metres and a draft of 17,7 metres. Capable of carrying 190,645 cubic metres of grain her 20,630 bhp engine gives her a speed of 14.5 knots.

Astern of her was another bulk carrier, the Thailand flagged Vanda Naree owned by Precious Shipping Public Co Ltd of Bangkok, Thailand. Built in 1985 she is 160 metres in length with a beam of 24 metres and a draft of 9.9 metres. Gross tonnage is 14,031 deadweight is 23,849 tons and she is capable of carrying 30,546 cubic metres of grain or 308 containers. Her 6,470 bhp engine gives her a speed of 13.6 knots.

Heading eastwards was the Antiguan flagged cargo vessel Countess Julia (ex Svenja) owned by Reederei Phoenix GMBH of Lee, Germany. Built in 1996 with a gross tonnage of 2,061 and a deadweight of 3,000 tons she is 88 metres in length with a beam of 11 metres and a draft of 4.9 metres. Capable of carrying 4,162 cubic metres of grain or 126 containers her 1,509 bhp engine gives her a speed of 10.5 knots.

Wednesday January 10

The James R H Stevenson completed her work on the slipway and was launched on the morning tide to be replaced by the William Stevenson (PZ 195) going back up the slipway to complete her stern gear repairs.

Heading westwards in the afternoon was the Cypriot registered cargo vessel Ara Zeebrugge (ex Merkur) owned by Ara bulk BV of Werkendam, Holland. Built in 1991 with a gross tonnage of 3,815 and a deadweight of 4,155 tons she is 103 metres in length with a beam of 16 metres and a draft of 6.1 metres. capable of carrying 6,820 cubic metres of grain or 424 containers of which 50 can be refrigerated, her 4,425 bhp engine gives her a speed of 14.5 knots.

Passing her heading east was the Isle of Man flagged car carrier City of Rome owned by Lief Hoegh & Co., of Oslo, Norway. Built in 1999 she is 99 metres in length with a beam of 21 metres and a draft of five metres her gross tonnage is 9,950 and deadweight is 2,794 tons. Her 5,600 bhp engine gives her a speed of 15.1 knots.

Thursday January 11

Calling into Newlyn early in the morning to shelter from the gales was the Zeebrugge registered Belgian trawler Wodan (Z.48). In the morning the Russian flagged bulb carrier Vera Maretskaya put out a 'Mayday' after her stewardess was lost overboard south east of Falmouth. Owned by Noverossiysk Shipping (Novoship) of Novorossiysk, Russia, she was built in 1984 with a gross tonnage of 16,502 and a deadweight of 24,105 tons. She is 184 metres in length with a beam of 23 metres and a draft of 10.1 metres. Capable of carrying 29.313 cubic metres of grain, her 11,200 bhp engine gives her a speed of 13.5 knots. Both Lizard and Falmouth lifeboats were launched together with two SAR helicopters from RNAS Culdrose but, unfortunately, the stewardess was not found.

Another vessel experiencing difficulties with the bad weather was the British flagged chemical tanker Maria Knutsen owned by Knutsen OAS Shipping of Haugesund, Norway. Built in 2001 she is 159 metres in length with a beam of 23 metres and a draft of 10.3 metres. Gross tonnage is 13,753 deadweight is 22,377 tons and she is capable of carrying 24,000 cubic metres of liquid chemicals with her 9,597 bhp engine giving a speed of 15.5 knots. While on passage off the Isles of Scilly she was hit by an unexpected 'enormous' wave which caused two of her crew to be injured when they were knocked down. They were airlifted off by helicopter and taken to hospital for treatment.

Sunday January 14

Heading westwards in the morning were four Russian flagged cargo vessels belonging to the North Western Shipping Joint Stock Co, of St Petersburg, Russia. The Baltiyskiy 102 built in 1978, Baltiyskiy 107 built in 1979 and the Baltiyskiy 110 built in 1980 are all 95 metres in length with a beam of 13 metres and a draft of four metres. Gross tonnage is 1,926 deadweight is 2,554 tons and they are each capable of carrying 3,475 cubic metres of grain or 83 containers with their 1,740 bhp engines giving them a speed of 12.5 knots. The Sormovskiy 3064 is 119 metres in length with a beam of 13 metres and a draft of 3.8 metres. Gross tonnage is 3,048 deadweight is 3,391 and she is able to carry 4,700 cubic metres of grain or 108 containers with her 870 bhp engine giving her a speed of 10.7 knots. The Le Guilvinec registered French Le Cedre Bleu (GV.686424 called in Newlyn in the morning to pick up hydraulic oil after she burst a hydraulic pipe at sea and lost all her hydraulic oil
