Families in Newlyn enjoyed a community health day on Saturday at the purpose built church hall, The Centre.Located on Chywoone Hill, The Centre is a multi-purpose church and community centre and is being used to deliver a wide range of new activities and facilities for families in the area.

The recent health day was organised by 19-year-old trainee youth worker Jen Lawrey.

She said: "It went really well. We made a lot of new contacts for the centre and a lot of new young people came. I am looking forward to putting together more events in the future, including a day focused on sports".

The health day included music, dance, cookery lessons, sports and health activities, information about drugs, smoking, diet, fitness, as well as information about osteoporosis.

Representatives from Age Concern attended and also at the event were Everybody Online Computer Company, whilst a play area for young children was provided by Sure Start.

Voirrey Palmer who heads up the Youth and Community Centre said: "The day went very well, there were a lot of people we hadn't seen before.

"There was a mixture of old and young and we were really pleased by the turnout. The children really seemed to enjoy themselves, especially taking the fake body parts out of the plastic bodies.

"Although the centre is aimed at Newlyn people, we have had people come from as far away as Camborne".

Alongside the facilities already provided, new services are being offered to families due to a growing relationship between the centre and Cornwall County Council's Family Project.

The new services are part of Sure Start Children's Centres, which are being developed by Family Services across the county.

Funded mainly through central Government's Sure Start Unit, new services on offer will include a toy library, a parenting course with cr??che, family support services, benefits and debt advice, family play and craft sessions and help and advice from community development workers.

Newlyn Centre Development Worker, Jeremy Drew said: "We hope that this is the beginning of a long working relationship with the Family services team and that together we can build on the services available for residents of Newlyn and surrounding areas."
