The Newlyn Fish Festival is the biggest one day event in Cornwall, attracting crowds in excess of 20,000 people.
Come
and sample a whole host of seafood including Sushi, Sashimi, Seafood
Paella, Smoked Seafoods, Fish Curries, Goan Seafood, Freshly Cooked
Cornish Crab, Lobster, Fish Cakes, Newlyn Crab Sandwiches, Oysters and
much more from renowned seafood companies Moshi Moshi, Tregida
Smokehouse, The Goan Seafood Company, Marisco Fish, Seafood and Eat it
and Flying Fish Feasts.
Within the traditional setting of the
Newlyn Fish Market enjoy the spectacle of the Festival Fish display,
together with all the wonderful aromas and flavours of Cornish
Seafood.
Opening this year’s Newlyn Fish Festival is skipper
John Buchan, featured by the BBC popular documentary “Trawlermen” the
series that charters the dramas at sea faced by the men from the north
east coast of Scotland who undertake one of the most dangerous jobs in
Britain. Many of the Fishing Industry’s key organisations and agencies
will be on hand to offer advice on important issues such as
sustainability, conservation, pollution, education and training.
Craftsmen will demonstrate traditional maritime skills including Withy
Pot making and Ropework, while Seafood Cornwall cook up a storm at the
popular cooking and fish filleting demos. Learn all the tricks of the
trade then bid for your supper at the famous Fish Auction …!
This
year’s Harbour entertainments will not fail to entertain either. New
for this year’s program is a fun Fancy Dress Boat Competition - prizes
will be awarded to the Best Dressed Fishing Boat and Crew. The RNLI, HM
Coastguards and Helicopter crews will be putting on rescue demos whilst
the Lifeboat Gig Race shall once again determine the winner of the
Trafalgar Trophy. A selection of Fishing vessels, from historic Luggers
to modern day Trawlers and Crabbers will be present with crews on hand
to describe the fishing methods employed in the South West along with
anecdotes of life at sea….. Also Don’t miss ICE, a breathtaking
performance by ha!Theatre, featuring large ice sculptures and frozen
displays coming to life.
Visit our many exhibitors outside the
Fish Market who shall be offering quality local produce such as Artisan
Breads from Blue Mango, award winning dressings, marinades, sauces,
chutneys and mayo's from Kernewek Herb Kitchen, local cheddar from
Worthy Farm, along with Cornish Meadow Preserves and Maria’s Mexican
Salsa’s. In the Fishmarket, to further highlight the positive
regeneration and investment of Newlyn Harbour, a model and
presentation of the new £ 7 million Fish Market by architects Pringle
Richards and Sharrat will be on public display.
To complement
the fish festival there will also be a selection of local artists and
expert craftsman such as Reflections of Cornwall and Redeemer Studios
with their impressive slate work, glass engraving and abstract art
focusing on the Newlyn Fishing Fleet and its challenges.
All
this and more will take place on the 27th August with the Camborne
Youth Band, Male Voice choirs and many others providing an
accomplished soundtrack to one of Cornwall’s finest days out.
