Fishermen in Newlyn are catching up with technology by netting the
advantages of the internet.Wireless broadband set up at the Community
Centre in Newlyn is enabling the community to make the most of the
technology.
And
a new publication launched by actnow - a £20m Objective One funded
programme - is promoting the benefits of broadband in the fishing
industry in Cornwall.
Robin Turner, a Newlyn fish merchant with J H Turner and Co, said broadband had brought positive changes to the business.
"It
gives instant access to a whole range of useful information such as
weather forecasts and pressure charts, making planning and safety
easier, and gives us access to online fish auctions," he said.
"Broadband has really helped increase our productivity."
actnow
works with local businesses by providing financial help and advice and
has set out to showcase the achievements of local fishermen and fish
wholesalers and retailers.
Nigel Ashcroft, project director,
said: "We are working closely with EverybodyOnline to ensure that the
benefits of broadband are appreciated by a wider audience."
EverybodyOnline in Newlyn is an initiative run by the national charity Citizens Online.
The project aims to help the local community overcome any barriers that they may have to digital technology.
