Cornwall's fishing Industry is celebrating after scooping two awards at the Seafood Awards held in London's Mariott Hotel on March 22.Skipper Stefan Glinski was first up to collect the 'Catching for the Market' award for his innovative approach to the Cornish sardine fishery, involving his Newlyn-based vessel Pride of Cornwall, and processing facility, Fresh-n-Freeze Ltd. However, the Cornish celebrations were not to end there as a group of Cornish fishermen representing the South West Handline Fishermen's Association (SWFHA), and Seafood Cornwall then collected the hotly contested Sustainable Futures award for the line-caught bass and pollack tagging scheme.
"It was great to see some of Cornwall's proactive and positive fishermen being recognised for the hard work they have been putting into developing both the Cornish sardine fishery and the bass tagging scheme," said Paul Trebilcock, chief executive of the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation.
Andrew Dewar-Durie, chairman of the Sea Fish Industry Authority, said the vast number of entries for the Sustainable Future award came from all corners of the industry - from restaurants to processors, and fishing boats to multiple retailers. "This response really demonstrates our industry's commitment to sustainability from sea right through to plate" he said.
