Cornish sculptor Tom Leaper has completed his work on the Newlyn
memorial to fishermen lost at sea.The life-sized bronze statue is of a
fisherman looking out to sea and will be a permanent memorial to those
who fished from all harbours in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
"The
latest generous donation has come from Prince Charles, Duke of
Cornwall, via his benevolent fund," said Douglas Williams, who has
helped the fund-raising efforts.
"We are most grateful for this
gift and proud that he is linked with the he charity. The fund-raising
has topped £40,000 toward a target of £50,000."
Fund-raising is set to continue with events during the summer and at Newlyn Fish Festival during the Bank Holiday weekend.
Recent donors have also included the Seamen's Institute Trust of Penzance, Barclays Bank and St Michael's Mount.
It
was in 2005 that fund-raising by the local committee began. There has
been great support from the fishing industry and the artistic
community, with donations also received from individuals and charities
throughout the country. Mr Williams added: "Penzance Town Council and
Penwith District Council have been strong supporters from the onset."
