The Princess Royal will visit Newlyn next Thursday, October 11, to
unveil the life-size bronze statue of a young fisherman. This follows
two years of intensive fund-raising towards the memorial to fishermen
lost at sea from all harbours in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
The
princess will first meet families of many who have lost their lives
while fishing, from more than 60 years ago to the present day.
At
Tolcarne, during the afternoon, she will view the statue by local
sculptor, Tom Leaper, which has been cast in bronze and brought back to
Cornwall.
There will be many pupils from local schools to greet the princess at the site facing the sea and Newlyn harbour.
Local and county leaders, as well community, fishing, art and project teams will be present.
Princess Anne will be invited to unveil the statue by the memorial committee chairman, Douglas Williams MBE.
There
will also be a dedication by the Rev Julyan Drew and Superintendent
David Whitehead of Newlyn Mission. This will be followed by singing
from Newlyn Male Choir.
Offshore, the Penlee lifeboat will be
joined by local boats and the coastguard tug. A search and rescue
helicopter from 771 Squadron at RNAS Culdrose will fly over the scene
at the completion of the formal ceremony.
Said Mr Williams: "We look forward to seeing as many as possible at Tolcarne for this special occasion in Newlyn's history."
