The Newlyn community is preparing to
welcome the Princess Royal this afternoon for what will be a moving
tribute to fishermen who have lost their lives at sea.
Princess Anne has
been invited by the port's harbour commissioners to unveil a memorial
statue of a young fisherman which will stare out to sea from its
setting at Tolcarne.
The
life-size bronze statue, which was created by local sculptor Tom
Leaper, is a memorial for those lost at sea from harbours in Cornwall
and the Isles of Scilly.
Three pieces of granite have been dredged from Newlyn harbour on which the statue will be set.
Michael Johnson, of The Copper Works, at Newlyn, has designed an intricate copper plaque which will be placed on the statue.
It will read: "This memorial To Fishermen Lost at Sea was unveiled by HRH The Princess Royal 11 October 2007."
The Newlyn community is close to reaching the £50,000 fund-raising target for the statue.
Before
the unveiling ceremony, Princess Anne will meet families of many who
have lost their lives while fishing at sea over the last 60 years.
In
the afternoon, a dedication by the Rev Julyan Drew and Superintendent
David Whitehead, of Newlyn Mission, will be followed by singing from
Newlyn Male Choir.
A display from the Penlee lifeboat and flyover from an RNAS search and rescue helicopter will complete the formal ceremony.
