No festival of the arts would be the same without an exhibition of
paintings.Local artists in Newlyn came together to create a wonderfully
dynamic show for the first art festival.
The
theme was 'Writing in the Air' and music was provided by Newlyn Male
Choir, the Bombrassa marching band, and jazz musicians Alan Thompson
and Mark Hadley.
During the weekend festival The Centre, on
Chywoone Hill, was host to a splendid show by many of Newlyn's
professional and amateur artists.
A photographic exhibition on
The Rosebud was organised by local photographer and historian Glyn
Richards. The famous boat undertook a voyage to the Houses of
Parliament to protest about the Newlyn clearances in 1937.
The
art side of the festival saw huge canvases of a more abstract level,
from artists such as Jeremy Le Grice, John Mitchell, Annie Metcalfe,
Ben Gunn and Mike Hindle.
There were also more closely observed
studies of marine life by artists including Nigel Haward, Bernard
Evans, Michael Praed, David Rest and Roger Curtis. In all there were
more than 30 artists showing art to appeal to all tastes.
Sunday
afternoon was a time for visitors to discuss the exhibition with the
artists and sculptors exhibiting in the Tolcarne Motors showroom.
"There were hundreds of people buzzing around the village over the weekend," said Newlyn artist Annie Metcalfe.
"There was a great intermingling and a wonderful team spirit which allowed the artists to reach out to new people.
"There
were a lot of people dashing about, going from one exhibition to the
next - it was a brilliant weekend and the festival organisers are
looking forward to the next one."
