Newlyn Art Gallery and the NSA (Newlyn Society of Artists) presents
Lineage, an exciting exhibition of new work by 24 artists.Informed and
inspired by the original Newlyn School artists the show will be on view
at the newly refurbished Newlyn Art Gallery until December 9.
Work will also be displayed at Penlee House Gallery and Museum and in the public realm.
The
association of Newlyn Art Gallery and the NSA has provided a focus and
continuity for a community of artists that have lived, worked and
created ever-changing art in the area for well over a century.
The
legacy that members of the NSA have inherited has always been about
real artistic endeavour, enquiring minds and a desire to push the
boundaries of contemporary practice.
To celebrate this lineage
and further its traditions, current members were invited by the gallery
to choose an aspect of the original Newlyn School and respond in a way
that suits their practice.
Director James Green explains:
"Members have conducted their own research into the art, interests and
influences of the Newlyn School artists and used this to inform new
work for the show.
"Much of that research has taken place at
Penlee House Gallery and Museum and it is therefore extremely
appropriate that some of the artists are showing their new commissions
in that context. Others have chosen to exhibit beyond both galleries in
the public realm."
"This is an exiting time for the gallery and
Lineage is the first of a number of projects we're developing with the
NSA for both Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange, Penzance."
Artists
exhibiting as part of Lineage include Alessandra Ausenda, Richard
Ballinger, Nicola Bealing, Nicola Buxton, Emma Churchill, Gillian
Cooper, Audrey Evans, Bernard Evans, Bernard Irwin, Kurt Jackson, John
Keys, Susan Kinley, Denny Long, Daphne McClure, Angie Munro, Paul
Nicholls, Sarah Poland, Nik Strangelove, Marion Taylor, Ken Turner,
Bren Unwin, Peter Webster, Rupert White, Belinda Whiting.
The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and on Sunday from 11am to 4pm.
