Lost fishermen remembered with pride Print E-mail

fishermans-memorial.jpgA bronze statue recently unveiled at Newlyn by the Princess Royal "reminds those present of the many Cornish fishermen who were lost while at sea," says Douglas Williams, vice-chairman of Newlyn Harbour Commissioners."Everyone who from now on looks at that statue knows only too well that the list of lost fishermen from all our harbours is long, too long, and we may now remember all those fishermen and their families with true pride and affection.

"The memorial is a landmark in Newlyn's long fishing history, one where we can now pay tribute to 100 and more fishermen lost at sea from harbours all around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly since 1940; and to hundreds before that down the centuries."

He thanked all who donated over the past two years to make it come about and said Newlyn's fishing industry stemmed from the 15th century.

"The port's heroes, fishing heritage and artistic reputation have throughout spanned the globe. That spirit of enterprise, initiative, energy, and independence still rules today and there are new harbour plans in action for Newlyn fishermen of the 21st century and beyond.
