Gallery chair faces challenge Print E-mail
Thursday, 01 November 2007
A challenge is being mounted against the management of the Newlyn and Exchange art galleries. The annual meeting of the Newlyn Art Galleries takes place next Wednesday (November 6) at 6.30pm at the Exchange Gallery in Princes Street, Penzance.

There, gallery members Simon Turney, Suze White and Francis Howie are standing for election to the committee in a bid to oust chairman Charles Hancock.

And there will also be a vote of no confidence in ProjectBase Cornwall Ltd, the company that manages exhibitions at the two galleries.

Mr Turney, an emergency planner, says he has become "increasingly disenchanted" with the management of the galleries during his three years as a member of Newlyn Art Galleries and hopes his election will help to bring about the changes he believes are necessary.

Mr Turney is being backed by Bernard Evans, a former chairman of the Newlyn Society of Artists.

He claims that management blunders at the galleries have vitally affected the interests of the Newlyn Society of Artists (NSA) and calls for the NSA to be allowed a third of the programming at both Newlyn and the Exchange.

He also questions the finances of ProjectBase Ltd, saying that "bureaucracy in the arts is burgeoning at the expense of practising artists".

Did anyone check that the voters at the AGM were in fact members ?
I was there as a non member and naturally did not speak or vote
but although we signed a book on admission nobody asked the voters if they were members - does this make the vote invalid ?

At the meeting it emerged that Suze White and Francis Howie had no idea that they were supposed to be in league with Simon Turney in his campaign against Charles Hancock and felt that, having been so badly represented in this article, they had no option but to withdraw from the election. Mr Turney's critique of Project Base turned out to be a complete mis-interpretation of some financial information he had found on the internet and his motion was defeated by 12 votes to 60. In the run up to the meeting Mr Turney had emailed and phoned anyone he could think of to spread his allegations. A terrible waste of effort when one phone call to Project Base would apparently have settled the matter. A pity the Cornishman Journalist didn't do some basic fact checking, if it comes to that. Responsible journalism? No need for that in West Cornwall apparently.

This article contains many inaccuracies - you may see a retraction in the Cornishman next week. ProjectBase do not manage the exhibitions at the Newlyn Art Gallery and the Exchange; the team employed at the Gallery decide on the exhibitions e.g. James Green the Director and Blair Todd the Exhibitions Manager.
