Newlyn gallery offering slots for would-be curators Print E-mail
Thursday, 01 November 2007
Calling all curators - Newlyn Art Gallery is offering you an opportunity to use its gallery spaces to try out potential exhibitions.

For four weeks, January 23-February 17, each curator, or group of artists/curators, will be given a five-day slot in either the upper or lower gallery in which to experiment with layout and curatorial ideas.

It is a chance for each curator to take his or her ideas and push them forward in a public environment, to resolve curatorial, conceptual and practical issues, without the constraints of presenting a finalised exhibition.

Each curator will be encouraged to consider additional elements to his or her project, for example, an accompanying essay or the devising of an event related to the proposed exhibition. The curator may wish to pay an artist for a new commission, and there will be a project budget to help with such a possible cost. The curator will also be invited to nominate a mentor to spend a day with him or her at the project.

At the conclusion of the eight five-day slots, the gallery will initiate a public symposium as a platform for all the curators and their mentors as well as the artists involved and visitors, to discuss processes and outcomes of the project. Would-be curators may apply for either the upper gallery (100 sq m with daylight lantern) or the lower gallery (50 sq m with possibility of being blacked out), and each five-day slot will run from Wednesday to Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday).

Each proposal should give a synopsis of the prototype exhibition with possible artists or art works involving ideas for additional project activities and should indicate how time and the galley space will be used. Candidates need to be in a position to commit to being active in the gallery for the five-day slot and to also attend the final symposium. The proposals can be developed during the period leading up to the exhibition.

* Initial proposals must be submitted by Monday, November 12, either by post to Blair Todd, Exhibitions Manager, c/o The Exchange, Princes Street, Penzance. TR182L, or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
