The Princess Royal has expressed her pride in unveiling a splendid
bronze memorial statue of a fisherman at Newlyn. She came to Newlyn last
month to unveil the memorial to fishermen lost at sea from all harbours
in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and to meet the families.
Her
lady-in-waiting, Lady Mary Carew Pole, has written to the chairman of
the local committee, Douglas Williams, with sincere thanks to him and
his colleagues for the visit.
"The Princess was proud to play her part in the wonderful project and found the occasion profoundly moving," wrote Lady Mary.
"The
amount of people there attested to the deep appreciation and backing
felt for such a worthwhile and beautiful memorial for lives so
tragically lost over the years.
"It was a wonderful occasion."
Mr
Williams said organisers were all deeply grateful that the Princess
Royal had consented so readily to perform the unveiling and meet so
many people from all parts of Cornwall.
Her visit had brought great satisfaction to all who had been concerned in the project, he said.
Work
would be continuing to complete the site at Tolcarne and its coastal
surrounds, with the assistance of Penwith District and Cornwall County
Councils.
The memorial committee is arranging to display the
large number of photographs taken by Phil Monckton at the special
evening at The Centre, Newlyn, on Friday, December 7 (8pm) when there
will also be entertainment and refreshments.
