A planning application has been
submitted for Newlyn's proposed £7 million fish market.
The document
outlines plans for a two-storey market building, four industrial units
and a reduction in harbour car parking spaces from 103 to 54.
A
Green Travel Plan, part of the planning application, proposes to reduce
car use to and from the harbour through car sharing schemes, cycle
stands and improved bus links.
Although current parking spaces are proposed to be cut, alternative facilities may be provided.
Tony Woodhams, fisheries project manager for Newlyn, said the new market would have the "lowest carbon footprint possible".
The
proposed building is designed with cold stores around its perimeter
which, according to the architects' report, will cut down running
costs. The existing Ice Works building will, however, have to move.
If
the plan is approved, construction of the industrial units will begin
in Spring. The market building will be built in Autumn. The new market
and units are the first phase of a master plan for Newlyn. Phase two
focuses on storm protection along with a boat building and repair
centre at Sandy Cove.
