The fisherman's Memorial in Newlyn has inspired a group of children to
write poems 'in the voice of the statue.'
The pupils from Trythall
school in Newmill visited the bronze figure, which was unveiled last
month by the Princess Royal, with Newlyn-based poet and playwright Phil
Bowen.
Phil said: "The kids decided the statue should be called Tom, which is interesting considering it was made by Tom Leaper.
"They wrote about the fisherman being content with life yet lonely as he looks across Mount's Bay.
"We like to get the children out and this inspirational piece of public art seemed like the perfect spot.
"I love the way he just stands there, rocking on a compass looking like he is about to lassoo the moon."
