Car parking spaces in Newlyn could "potentially" be increased
temporarily if the £7m fish market development goes ahead.
The planning
application, submitted to Penwith District Council in November,
proposed to keep 53 car parking spaces out of the 103 which exist in
the harbour area.
However,
Tony Woodhams, Newlyn's fisheries project manager, said while the
long-term plan was to phase out spaces, the existing 103 spaces would
be retained or increased.
The planning application states there
is "potential temporary allocation for 80 car parking spaces" on the
site of the existing fish market building.
The green travel plan
section of the document, which proposes to reduce car use to and from
the harbour through car sharing schemes, cycle stands and improved bus
links, reads: "Whilst it is intended to retain the total number of car
parking spaces available to the fishing industry, it is anticipated
that this process of decanting spaces from one area to another will
test the demand for car parking spaces and may over the time taken to
implement the proposed master plan, establish that less spaces are
required than currently provided."
