The people of Newlyn displayed their usual team spirit on Friday, when
several hundred turned out to watch the spectacular Christmas lights
switch-on.
Music was performed by Penzance Silver Band, while Newlyn
Male Choir led the carol singers.Malcolm Pilcher, village councillor,
was the event compere, while prayers and blessings were delivered by
the Rev Julyan Drew and Keith Dickson, superintendent from the
Fishermen's Mission.
John
Lambourn of the West Cornwall Lugger Industry Trust performed the
switch-on, before a burst of fireworks lit the sky on the South Quay.
A clutch of West Cornwall towns and villages celebrated the switch-on of their Christmas lights this weekend.
In
St Just, 200 turned people turned out to see the town's mayor, Monty
Nicholls, switch on the lights at Saturday night's ceremony, which was
followed by a Christmas carol service in the Parish Church.
And
Godolphin, renowned for its superb display, lived up to its reputation,
when Tony Phillips, primary school head teacher, switched on a
glittering display on Sunday.
On Thursday, in Germoe,
schoolchildren led the carol singing and in Polgigga, St Levan, it was
mulled wine and mince pies all round when the St Buryan Young Farmers
sang around the community Christmas tree.
