As project officer in the development of a new fish market he is confident that, after planning permission was recently passed by Penwith District Council, building work may begin in a matter of weeks.

"NFIF and Newlyn Harbour Commissioners have managed to get the total development cost under the limit of £7 million demanded by the Government," he said.

"We are now waiting to clinch funding from the European Fisheries Fund - for the commissioners to raise their borrowing up to £2 million - and seek funding from other sources.

"If all that goes smoothly there's no reason why work on the ancillary buildings shouldn't begin right away, with a start on the new fish market quite soon.

"It all depends on the go-ahead from Newlyn Harbour Commissioners and they have already fully backed the plan.

"The bottom-line is that Penwith District Council is in full support of the development, and funding is in place, so there is no reason at all why building work cannot commence very soon."
