Keel Alley - Newlyn Environmental Group findings Print E-mail
Monday, 04 February 2008
The Environment Group of the Newlyn Fishing Industry Forum have been collecting the views of residents regarding possible developments at Keel Alley.

SUMMARY OF COMMENTS ON KEEL ALLEY WITH SOME ADDITIONAL REMARKS

The two points which dominate the comments are that Keel Alley should act as a centre to Newlyn and that it should remain green – as a green public area which can be used as a meeting point, a performance area, a place for a farmers market and the mobile library.

The area should be in keeping with the spirit of Newlyn with shrubs, seating and greenery (particularly with appropriate shrubs for the area) and it should also be child friendly.

The Swedish model of removing all road markings and making traffic secondary to pedestrian areas was mentioned. This has been brought up by another person since the meeting.

Perhaps a wide paved (setts?) area incorporating the present pavement could surround the green space, with circles for shrubs and trees and terraced to the lower level of grass. Traffic between Keel Alley and the area in front of the fish market could have a ‘barrier’ across half the road (before and after the area) so that one way has right of way. There could also be two walkways across the road in the same surface as the paved areas thus linking the public space in front of the fish market with Keel Alley.

The Group would welcome further comments/ideas.
